When the prequel series NCIS: Origins introduced Austin Stowell as the younger version of original protagonist Leroy Jethro Gibbs, it seemed likely that Gibbs’ grief over the murder of his daughter and wife, followed by Gibbs’ pursuit of revenge, would serve as the central conflict for at least the bulk of the rest of the show’s first season, if not beyond. While the details of Gibbs’ tragic past are known to longtime viewers, the ninth episode of NCIS: Origins, “Vivo o Muerto,” unleashed a major surprise by revealing that Gibbs killed Pedro Hernandez, the Mexican drug dealer who killed Gibbs’ daughter and wife, prior to becoming a rookie special agent at the NIS Camp Pendleton branch.
