The mash-up of science fiction and Western has proven to be a complicated formula to nail down; comparing Westworld to Wild Wild West shows the highs and lows the genre is capable of. Yet, even a film like Wild Wild West can find appreciation with time and a dedicated cult following. While not as panned as the Will Smith sci-fi/Western, Jon Favreau’s 2011 film Cowboys & Aliens also bombed at the box office and was met with mostly negative reviews from critics and fans.
