13 New Directors Who Recently Received Oscar Nominations for Their Debut Films

The Academy Awards have developed a reputation for only recognizing the same filmmakers over and over again. There are many legacy directors, actors, composers, writers and more whose work is consistently recognized at the Oscars solely because of the name attached to it. This year, many of the usual suspects, such as John Williams, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Christopher Nolan and more, received nominations for the umpteenth time. Williams’ nomination for his Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny score, in particular, marks the 54th time the famed composer has been nominated for an Oscar.
