The landscape of American entertainment has become politicized like never before. Thanks in large part to the virulent crusade of current US President Donald Trump and his followers against anything they perceive as “woke,” the mere presence of characters who are not white, male, heterosexual, or cisgender in films and TV series has often elicited intense backlash from certain corners of the Internet. Indeed, large franchises like Star Wars and Dr. Who have been accused of alienating fans and pandering to a “woke” audience for their efforts to include more women, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals in their more recent projects, sometimes even resulting in violent online abuse towards actors involved in said projects.
