Val Kilmer, one of the most underrated character actors of all time, passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 65 following complications from pneumonia. While he never quite made his way onto the A-list, he was always a reliable onscreen presence, equally adept at comedy and drama. He broke through in 1984 as the lead in the laugh-out-loud funny Top Secret, quickly gaining critical recognition with supporting turns in Willow and Top Gun (a role he reprised over 30 years later in Top Gun: Maverick).
