Based on true events, Los Frikis tells an astonishing coming-of-age story about the extreme lengths Cuban punk rockers went to free themselves from the oppressive socialist regime. Filmmakers Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz follow The Peanut Butter Falcon with a second feature that’s equally frank in its depiction of a desperate search for freedom and humanity. Los Frikis paints a damning portrait of needless misery and subjugation, but is also thrilling with the ecstatic power-chord frenzy of unfettered youth. The film’s endearing characters grip your attention until a downbeat third act loses narrative adrenaline.
