Warning: Spoilers follow for The SubstanceJust over a week into its release, its already clear that The Substance is destined to go down as one of 2024s most talked about films. And the hype is completely justified. Director Coralie Fargeat has made an utter powder keg of a movie, ruthlessly satirizing female objectification and ageism in the entertainment industry while expertly blending body horror with high camp. On top of that, it features career-best performances from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, both of whom deserve Oscar consideration (despite the Academys notorious stigma against horror).
